Fear on the golf course can come in many shapes and sizes and it can result in a multitude of problems ranging from lack of enjoyment, through poor scoring and frustration to outright anger. Most golfers will have experienced fear on the golf course, either personally or from watching a playing partner.

As an amateur golfer, although my golf is very important to me, my livelihood does not depend directly on my ability to score well. However, I can think of many times, especially in my younger days, when I was uncomfortable, nervous, scared and downright terrified on the golf course.

You may have read on another of my articles. entitled Channel Your First Tee Nerves into Unconscious Golf Resources for Better Golf, about my nerves on the first tee in the Golf Illustrated Junior Vase at Hexham in the early 70s. When the starter announced on the loudspeaker system that they were expecting great things from me after my hole in one there the previous day, I could hardly stand up, let alone hit a good drive down the middle.

I’ve experienced similar feelings when I’ve arrived on the first tee and found I was playing with some or other golfing celebrity. I’ll never forget Bill Shankland, my then golf coach, asking me to stand in for him in a game in late-June of 1970. Bill explained that he was injured and could I take his place in a friendly fourball the following day. He went on to explain that there’d be no pressure as I was playing at my home club and partnering the club pro, Colin Christison, a man I’d played with many times before. Bill also mentioned that one of our opponents would be Ian Connelly from Welwyn Garden City, later to become Nick Faldo’s first coach and someone I also knew. I was a bit nervous plying with two pros I’d watched playing in the Agfa tournament at Stoke Poges, but I knew them both and felt I could handle it. The next day, I got to the club and as I joined my playing partner Colin walking to the first tee, I noticed that there was quite a crowd of my fellow club members behind the tee. I nearly collapsed when I walked through the crowd and Colin introduced me to our other opponent. It was Tony Jacklin, back in the UK to prepare for the British Open after winning the US Open a few weeks earlier. I was terrified and it took a lot of quiet calming words from Colin to get me through the first nine holes. I started to enjoy the experience as I loosened up on the second nine. Like most people back in the early 70s, I had no knowledge of golf psychology and the best advice available was to pull yourself together and get on with it. That was difficult and the effect didn’t last!

I’m sure that I would still be very nervous if I found myself unexpectedly playing with a US Open Champion. The difference is now that I have the means to relax myself using a variety of golf psychology techniques and really get the most from the experience. I’d probably play my normal game.

So what techniques would I use? Well the quickest technique would be to use my finger-thumb NLP Resource Anchor that would both relax me and get me into a confident and resourceful state. Learn Self Hypnosis In Five Easy Steps

Self hypnosis may seem mysterious, but it really consists of only 5 simple steps. Of course, you will need to practice these steps to become adept at self hypnosis, but the steps themselves – induction, deepening, suggestions, post-hypnotic suggestion, and awakening – are not difficult to understand.
Self hypnosis begins with induction. In this process, you bring yourself into a hypnotic state. You can begin with progressive relaxation or by focusing on a word or phrase. Most people find induction easiest if they are comfortably positioned in a quiet room with their eyes closed. After you have practiced enough that you can reach the hypnotic state with a single word or thought (a trigger), you will not be as easily distracted by noise or visual stimuli.
The next step in self hypnosis is deepening. The purpose of deepening is to develop the hypnotic state further so that you can communicate directly with the subconscious mind. An effective way to achieve this is to count down from 20 to 1, feeling yourself go deeper with each number. You can also repeat, “I am going deeper and deeper.”
The main work of self hypnosis is carried out during the third step, suggestions. In this step you will use visualizations and affirmations to suggest the desired changes to the subconscious mind. Visualization involves using the imagination to create a picture, complete with all 5 senses as well as thoughts and feelings. In this picture, you have achieved the change you want to produce. If you wish to quit smoking, you may imagine yourself at a party or another place you might smoke, but doing something else pleasurable. The better you can see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste the desired situation, the more powerful the visualization will be. Affirmations are also used during the suggestions step. Affirmations are positive statements that describe desired changes to the subconscious mind. These changes may involve behaviors, beliefs, or attitudes.
Using a post-hypnotic suggestion, the fourth step, helps to make the suggestions of the third step more powerful. A post-hypnotic suggestion states that when a particular event happens outside of self hypnosis, the changes made in the third step will become stronger. For example, returning to the example of smoking, a post-hypnotic suggestion might be “when I see a pack of cigarettes I will want to (something you have visualized yourself doing instead of smoking).” The outside stimulus is the cigarettes; the response is the behaviors suggested in the visualizations.
The fifth and final step in self hypnosis is awakening. You should allow at least 20 to 30 seconds for this step, since coming back to full consciousness too quickly may cause disorientation (confusion about time and place). An effective technique is counting from 1 to 5, telling yourself at each number that you are becoming more awake and aware. Each number should take about 5 to 6 seconds. When you reach the number 5, you will be fully conscious.
Self hypnosis does require practice, but if you practice the 5 steps described above, you can become expert at this process and use it to make the changes you desire.

You can liken your mind to a complex computer system. Because the conscious mind is still very much active when you speak affirmations it draws on the subconscious resources that hold your beliefs and past experience when it is presented with any kind of statement to ascertain whether it is true or false. This is why auto-suggestion techniques like affirmations very rarely work. The conscious mind uses your current subconscious programming to dispute and totally disregard the new statement thus not allowing it access to the subconscious mind! The easiest way to avoid this problem is through the use of self hypnosis.

The best way to program the subconscious mind is by bypassing the conscious mind and the best way to do this is through self hypnosis!

During self hypnosis you completely bypass the conscious mind and gain direct access to the subconscious. Once you have entered a state of self hypnosis it is very easy to remove your current beliefs and replace them with whatever beliefs you choose. Then when you think of the statement again and the conscious mind accesses the subconscious resources it is given the new programming i.e. the beliefs, thoughts and emotions that you programmed into it!
