Self hypnosis is probably a term that you have heard about and maybe it is something you are not very familiar with. Self hypnosis is becoming very popular and many people are interested to find out more about this. So lets take a look at this subject of self hypnosis.
The definition of self-hypnosis is that it is a naturally state of your mind which can be defined as a heightened state of focused concentration with the willingness to follow instructions.
This willingness is also called autosuggestion. Autosuggestion is used for positive or negative symptoms explained by the thoughts of a person. For example if someone experiences more pain when they think it will hurt. This influence of the mind on the body can be used in a positive way to improve the way a person feels.
Autosuggestion is a process by which someone focuses the subconscious mind to think a certain way for a given purpose. This is accomplished through self-hypnosis. The acceptance of autosuggestion may be quickened through mental visualization. Autosuggestion is most commonly accomplished by presenting ones mind with repetitive thoughts until those thoughts become internalized. Visualizing the manifestations of a belief are typical means of influencing ones mind via repetitive autosuggestion.
Hypnosis is a completely natural state. It is pleasant and relaxing. The ancient method of hypnosis is more and more used in medicine where it has proved to be a valuable alternative to drugs. Hypnosis has been used for thousands of years to effectively speed up healing and relieve stress symptoms.
The act of inducing hypnosis is referred to as an induction procedure. There is no consensus among practitioners or researchers for which method is the most effective induction procedure. Many associate hypnotic induction with a swinging pendulum, but there are many usable techniques.
Most commonly the hypnotist will use calming techniques designed to relax the subject by suggesting that their limbs are going limp, eyelids are getting heavy and so on. Relaxation is not a key factor, however, as hypnosis can be induced during vigorous exercise.
Also there are great differences in length of an induction. On one side you have PR (Progressive Relaxation), which can take up to half an hour or more. Then the other method is RI (Rapid Induction), a method to induce hypnosis in just seconds by a combination of shocking the subject and the subjects anticipation. For a stage hypnotist using RI is absolutely necessary, as using PR in a show would take more time than the audience is willing to wait.
Hypnotic susceptibility is a measurable amount of responsiveness that one can have to hypnosis. Not all people can be hypnotized, but about 10% of people respond exceptionally well. There is little evidence linking susceptibility to intelligence or personality traits, but some research has linked hypnosis to the amount of absorption and imagination in subjects.
Recent research suggests that highly hypnotizable people have high sensory and perceptual gating abilities that allow them to block some stimuli from awareness.
There is a common claim that no one can be hypnotized against his will. The counter-claim given by many hypnotists is that while it is not possible make someone do anything against his will, it is possible to change what it is that he wishes to do. This lowering in inhibitions is called disinhibition and can sometimes be found in the hypnotized subject and leads him to performing acts that he would normally consider socially unacceptable or simply would not do otherwise.

We have all seen shows where a person does something they would not normally do under hypnosis. They hypnotize a woman, put her to sleep and then wake her and give her an onion to eat telling her it is an apple. The woman eats the onion and enjoys it as if it were really an apple. Some believe that with hypnosis you can convince a person of almost anything while others believe that their sub-conscious would stop them from doing anything that could harm them. There is no such thing as a person that is cannot be hypnotized, but some are hypnotized easier than others are. How Self-Hypnosis Works

You need to sit quietly somewhere peaceful. Imagine a happy scene such as sitting in a garden looking at the flowers and birds. Now, add sounds and scents to this picture in your imagination. Self-hypnosis can be defined as a self-induced trance state. Hypnosis induced by yourself, focusing your mind in a positive way, affirmations, and relaxation. This concept is closely related to autosuggestion, which is used for physical symptoms explained, at least in part, by the thoughts and beliefs of a person. These techniques have been used in reducing pain in labor for a century and nowadays are being applied more extensively than ever. This is a consequence of the increasing number of scientific research demonstrating the benefits of the use of hypnotherapy in the clinical setting. The aim of this paper is to review existing and published evidence on the effectiveness of hypnosis for childbirth.Hypnosis has been used in obstetrics for many years. In 1922, Shultze-Rhonhof reported an 89.5% success rate in a series of 79 cases. He came to the conclusion that hypnosis was a useful and harmless anesthetic agent. But not everyone thought that hypnosis was a completely safe technique for the mother and the child. Regarding the safety of the technique, in 1949, a leading article in the British Medical Journal states that there is no evidence that in capable and conscientious hands hypnotism, repeated as many times as is desired, carries with it any physical or psychological danger to the patient. Later in 1952, an investigation carried out by A.M. Michael and published under the title of Hypnosis and Childbirth, the author concludes that there is evidence to show that the duration of labor is shortened. He also concludes that the nursing staff can be easily trained to deal with the hypnotic patient, and that the method is both practicable and safe for the mother and infant.Today, more than 50 years after those studies were conducted, in the era of powerful study designs like the randomized clinical trial, hypnosis has been recognized as a proven method to avoid pharmacological or invasive interventions for pain management. In a systematic review conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration (Cochrane Database Syst Rev 2006; 4: CD003521), the joint results of five clinical trials comparing self-hypnosis with the treatment of reference showed that women taught self-hypnosis had decreased requirements for pharmacological analgesia by 47%, including epidural analgesia by 70%. As a professional hypnotherapist with a strong interest in personal development it always amazes me when I suggest self-hypnosis techniques to a client and they respond with “what, you mean I could hypnotise myself?”
There is a truism in hypnosis circles… all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. By this we mean that the hypnotist simply acts as a guide, leading the client into trance by going first and assisting the client by directing the client’s attention in specific ways.
Hypnosis is many things… in many ways it similar to the photon in quantum physics… what it is and how it behaves depends on how one views it and the preconceptions one brings to it.
Hypnosis is communication… all communication directs attention in one way or another. With language and non-verbal communication we shape events in another human being’s mind. We cannot NOT communicate. Self-hypnosis is a process of communicating with oneself, directing one’s own attention in specific ways in order to produce states that are commonly recognised as trance states.
Trance states are nothing special, we go in and out of these states all the time. There is a mystique built up around this term trance, but a trance state can be characterised by the direction of attention being inwardly focussed. This focus can be very intense, as in deep meditation, or broad and unspecified as in daydreaming states. If you have ever driven a car and realised that you have no recollection of the last three miles, or if you have ever been so absorbed in a book or a film that you’ve failed to hear someone calling your name, then you have been in a trance state.
In hypnosis we use those trance states to positive effect, through a combination of any or all of techniques such as suggestion, mental rehearsal, guided imagery/visualisation and more. In self-hypnosis you can do exactly the same.
I am going to share a very simply yet profoundly effective method of inducing such a trance state with you right now. Although it can help to speak out loud while learning the technique, once you are comfortable with this approach you can practice in silence, which makes it ideal for all sorts of circumstances.
This technique is a variation of that developed by Elizabeth (Betty) Erickson, wife of the late Milton Erickson. Dr Erickson is recognised by many as one of the greatest clinical hypnotherapists of the 20th century and founded an approach to therapy that bears his name, Ericksonian Hypnosis. However, his wife Betty was no mean hypnotist herself and had a deep understanding of the relationship between perception and mental state, as experience with this technique will show.
There are a number of ways in which you can use this technique… you could use it to enter into a state in which you then carry out a guided visualisation using symbols or visual metaphors or a mental rehearsal of yourself performing with excellence in some future activity. You could give yourself positive suggestions prior to the induction, saying something like “and as I enter a state of deep relaxation, I become increasingly (positive quality one wishes to acquire)…” The possibilities are limited only by your imagination, and will be explored in a future article.
Now to the technique, the Betty Erickson Self Hypnotic Induction. First, ensure you are sat somewhere comfortable. Somewhere with some external activity is useful but not too stimulating, and that has some visual variation (you will understand why in a moment). Take a few deep, slow breaths (always a good precursor to relaxation, and with practice will give you a head start in entering that trance state).
So, now you are sat comfortably, notice, and make comment about, something you see (e.g. I see the shadows formed by irregularities on the wall). Do this three times with three different observations. Do this slowly and give yourself plenty of time.
Notice, and make comment about, something you hear (e.g. I hear the sound of my own breathing). Do this three times with three different observations.
Notice, and make comment about, something you feel (e.g. I feel the temperature of the air on my skin). Do this three times with three different observations.
Repeat the cycle (I see… I hear… I feel…) twice for each sense (sight, sound and sensation) with two different observations, and then again once for each sense.
You may wish at this point to close your eyes if you haven’t done so already, and repeat the whole process from within an imagined scene, or using internal images and external sounds and sensation. The trick with this technique is not to be too rigid, but to go with what works for you. After some practice I find myself in trance quite rapidly and usually close my eyes around the point at which I repeat the visual observation twice. If your mind wanders, that’s OK, just relax into the state. This is a method of entering deep states of relaxation, not a competitive sport!
That really is it. As I said, a profoundly simple yet effective technique. Use it to relax, use it to install positive suggestion or use it to simply enter a calm still space within. With practice you can enter deeply relaxing trance states very quickly, in all sorts of situations, at work, travelling, at home, and use this states to boost productivity, explore your own personal/spiritual development and step up to excellence in all aspects of performance. Hypnosis has long been rumored to have powerful mind-altering properties which can help to treat a range of psychological conditions and lifestyle habits. Conjuring images of elaborate stage shows with unsuspecting ordinary people making a fool of themselves, hypnotism has been seen as a joke, or entertainment for decades. It is important firstly to make the distinction between hypnosis, and what is known as hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is the actual treatment of patients with psychological needs, such as those who wish to break life-long habitual behavior, and those who want treatment for some underlying mental condition. Hypnosis on the other hand refers to the natural mental we may all experience from time to time, which relaxes the mind and opens it to the power of subtle suggestion. Hypnosis is generally reserved for improving self worth and an overall sense of well-being, and can be a very powerful and relaxing technique.
The first thing to do to hypnotize yourself is to find a relaxed and comfortable environment. Lie down, or sit down in a comfortable chair. Be conscious of the weight of your body being absorbed by the platform on which you are sitting, and feel relaxation through your arms, legs and torso. Close your eyes, and try to forget about the world, focusing on deep breathing and utter calm. After around a quarter of an hour, you should awake as if from a sleep, and you will feel significantly more relaxed and refreshed, ready to continue your daily business and deal with the stresses of every day life.
Hypnosis is a very natural process, and it is certainly not to be feared. Think of hypnosis as a conscious sleep, and understand that you are still in complete control of your actions throughout. It is merely a process whereby we can feel comfortable and deal with stress in a more constructive and healthy way.

Before you begin your self hypnotic exercises you should make a time schedule for it. Try to stick to your schedule and soon you will get into the habit of doing it and it will come natural to you. Practice your self hypnosis sessions every day, if at all possible. make it an important part of your daily life. Don’t try to overdo it, five minutes a day is enough. Repeat your suggestions to yourself as often as possible throughout each day.

Silence can be helpful for most people to relax, so you may want to choose a quiet, private area far away from the ringing of the phone and outside traffic noises. Many people use a fan to drown out the sounds that could disturb concentration. Pleasant scents can also help a person to relax, so using aromatic candles or incense can also be a good idea.

Here is a basic view of the process of self hypnosis. There are many different approaches to self hypnosis, but the fundamental principles remain the same. Keep in mind that these are the basic steps you will need to go through in order to achieve self hypnosis and to accomplish desired self improvement.

1. List and arrange your goals from the most important goal to the less important. If at all possible, your goals should be measurable. Set clearly defined short and long term goals so you will be able to measure your progress and achieve personal satisfaction once you have successfully obtained your goals. Your self confidence will also improve as you become more attuned to your capabilities as you complete or achieve your goals.

2. For each specific goal, you should define appropriate suggestions on how to achieve each goal. You will need to convert your goals to specific instructions to your subconscious mind.

3. Use the first few minutes of your self hypnotic session to get as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Try to clear your mind from all of your concerns and problems.

4. Begin your hypnotic phase by repeating aloud the hypnotic words or phrases that you have chosen in step 2. Think of these words or listen to a hypnotic recording customized for your own personal hypnotic and goal fulfillment needs.

It is recommended that you keep a journal to help you to measure your progress. From time to time you may look over your journal entries and ask yourself, “Am I closer to my goal now than before I started?” If you answer “yes”, then congratulations are in order. If your answer is “No”, you may need to rethink and reorganize your method. The important thing is not to become discouraged. Self hypnosis can truly be an effective way to achieve self improvement.

As an amateur golfer, although my golf is very important to me, my livelihood does not depend directly on my ability to score well. However, I can think of many times, especially in my younger days, when I was uncomfortable, nervous, scared and downright terrified on the golf course.

You may have read on another of my articles. entitled Channel Your First Tee Nerves into Unconscious Golf Resources for Better Golf, about my nerves on the first tee in the Golf Illustrated Junior Vase at Hexham in the early 70s. When the starter announced on the loudspeaker system that they were expecting great things from me after my hole in one there the previous day, I could hardly stand up, let alone hit a good drive down the middle.

I’ve experienced similar feelings when I’ve arrived on the first tee and found I was playing with some or other golfing celebrity. I’ll never forget Bill Shankland, my then golf coach, asking me to stand in for him in a game in late-June of 1970. Bill explained that he was injured and could I take his place in a friendly fourball the following day. He went on to explain that there’d be no pressure as I was playing at my home club and partnering the club pro, Colin Christison, a man I’d played with many times before. Bill also mentioned that one of our opponents would be Ian Connelly from Welwyn Garden City, later to become Nick Faldo’s first coach and someone I also knew. I was a bit nervous plying with two pros I’d watched playing in the Agfa tournament at Stoke Poges, but I knew them both and felt I could handle it. The next day, I got to the club and as I joined my playing partner Colin walking to the first tee, I noticed that there was quite a crowd of my fellow club members behind the tee. I nearly collapsed when I walked through the crowd and Colin introduced me to our other opponent. It was Tony Jacklin, back in the UK to prepare for the British Open after winning the US Open a few weeks earlier. I was terrified and it took a lot of quiet calming words from Colin to get me through the first nine holes. I started to enjoy the experience as I loosened up on the second nine. Like most people back in the early 70s, I had no knowledge of golf psychology and the best advice available was to pull yourself together and get on with it. That was difficult and the effect didn’t last!

I’m sure that I would still be very nervous if I found myself unexpectedly playing with a US Open Champion. The difference is now that I have the means to relax myself using a variety of golf psychology techniques and really get the most from the experience. I’d probably play my normal game.

Self Hypnosis Yesterday, Brainwave Entrainment Today

Self hypnosis is actually the power to enter into the subconscious mind and try as best as we can to speak to the powerful subconscious mind. Hypnotism has been around for a long time, and it even has been used in ancient times to measure some sort of mind control. Many hypnotists have been on TV and what you see is really perhaps a glamorised version of the real thing. There are no beautiful assistants and there are no advertisement breaks, what you need to understand is that you should think about more advanced techniques like brainwave entrainment. Now I am sure that you have heard about it and now, we will tell you how to effectively use brainwave entrainment.
For one thing, you need a really quiet space, and if you can find one in your house, then that is really great, but if you cant then, you need to be able to find one. The good thing about this is that you can actually induce silence through the use of music plugged into your ears, and make sure that it is really relaxing and soothing music. Either method is fine, as along as you are able to concentrate and reflect inwards to be able to start the self hypnotism process. So this is the first factor that you need to think about and gain.
The next thing you need to do is to actually be able to make sure that you can learn about your own breathing techniques. You need to keep them under control and gain some sort of rhythm when you are doing this. Breathing is one of the most important things when you are talking about the ability to actually control your breathing and relax your mind. This is one of the most important factors when you are talking about self hypnosis, because when you are able to control your breathing, you would be able to induce your own peace and time of zen.
The other thing you might want to do is to actually tap into the power of the brain. If you did not know, the brain has its own mechanism to actually induce its own super states and hypnotism, and these are down to the brainwaves that are being produced by the neurons in the brain as well. So when it comes to this, all you need to do is to reverse engineer this situation with the use of some available technology and there are plenty of these that can be found online for your own usage. This is where brainwave entrainment comes into the picture.
So this is the good news about how you can induce your own mental improvement episode – all from the power of brainwave entrainment technology, and as you can see, it is not as difficult as you think it is. All you need to be able to do is to get the right sort of environment, the right sort of mental control and sometimes, the right kind of technology.
